Which Filter Suits my Application Best?

John says, in simple terms …

For spas, swimspas and small pools (say 2,000 to 20,000 ltrs of water), its best to use a cartridge filter.  This is because the alternative sand/multi-media filter, can loose 900 to 1300 ltrs (depending on pump size) of water per backwash. This loss of water can cause water levels to drop below the skimmer box opening, causing expensive damage to pumps.  For larger pools (say over 30,000ltrs), you can use either a sand/multi-media or a cartridge filter.  The deciding factor will be water usage vs time to clean filter.John’s tip:
If you like the low maintenance of a sand/multi-media filter, but want to save water, you can install a pre filter before the sand/multi-media filter to reduce your backwashing frequency and hence save water – the best of both worlds.  Another water saving idea is to install a cartridge filter on the sand/multi-media filter’s waste line and backwash the filter back into the pool. The water you use to hose down the cartridge filter element will be significantly less than what you’ll use to back washing your sand/multi-media filter.

Pre filters are recommended to be used in conjunction with any final stage filters, such as, sand and multi-media or cartridge filters.  They are designed to trap larger debris that the skimmer and pump baskets miss.  They reduce the frequency sand/multi-media and cartridge filters need to be backwashed and cleaned, which in turn, increases sand, media and cartridge element life and saves precious time and water.Sand & Multi-Media Filters
Multi-media filters have been designed to use sand or alternative media, such as, Zeolite to purify water.  Using a special graded filter sand, these filters can filter unwanted particles down to 15 to 20 micron (1 micron = 1/1000mm).  Using Zeolite they can filter down to 3 to 5 micron.  Sand and Zeolite will last for several years in most domestic applications, however, to clean this media these filters incorporate a backwashing feature, which uses the pool/spa’s water in a reverse direction to clean itself.  Although this is a fast and easy procedure, it unfortunately uses a significant amount of water in the process.  This should be considered in selecting which sort of filter will suit your application.  Multi-media filters are not recommended for spas or small pools, due to the amount of water required for backwashing.Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters are highly recommended for small pools, spas and for applications where water saving is a major criteria.  They are also a great option where space for installation is limited.  They can filter impurities down to 15 to 30 microns.  Unlike multi-media filters, cartridge filters take longer to clean as the internal cartridge element(s) need to be removed and hosed down regularly.  Over time these internal cartridge elements wear and will require replacing, which make cartidge filters more expensive to maintain than sand/multi-media filters.John’s tip:
You can buy a larger size cartridge filter than maybe required to reduce cleaning frequency and save your time.
